Perhaps, one of the greatest reasons is the frequent opportunity to listen to some extremely talented buskers. Since I love just spending time walking around and experiencing the street and "Platz" scenes, there are often street musicians. Now I have heard some awesome street buskers in the US, but I particularly like what I've heard in Germany because they often play classical music. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a rock-n-roller through and through, give me some Neil Young, Pink Floyd or some Boss and I'm A-OK. I never listened to classical music growing up, it was never played at home. It was Dean Martin, Herb Albert and some Patsy Cline. But I have come to really love the music of the oboe, the cello, the violin, and, of course, the organ and piano. So when I hear buskers playing songs from these instruments, I stop, I listen, I take photos, and I enjoy, often along with a large appreciative crowd.
Yesterday, in Munich I saw, once again, a band from the Ukraine. They are very, very good, at least to my ear. I have seen them probably over 6 times since 2022. As I was walking to the Christmas Market at the Marien Platz I hear them playing. Once again, like many people, I stoped and enjoyed their beautiful music and felt goosebumps, either from the cold or their beautiful renditions of the Pachelbel Canon and then Pro una Cabeza, the "tango" song (as in the Scent of a Woman, hoora).
It's special to be walking along and hear such beautiful music. Music that needs no words to inspire and transfix an audience. No deafening bass, no nonsensical lyrics, no countless f-words, no racial slang words, or hateful words. Just beautiful music. Ahhh.
This is something I really enjoy. Who says I only come to Germany to drink Beer?
