The December 2024 trip to Germany was NOT going to be one of my typical "fly by the seat of your Lederhosen" trips. No, I had made a plan long before American Airlines messed up my first day of traveling. With all of the craziness and mean-spirited people and events both at home and abroad, I was on a quest for some good ol' Christmas cheer. It was time tovisit all the magical Weihnachsmärkte - German Christmas Markets. When I heard Burl Ives singing "It's a holly, jolly Christmas" over the airport intercom when I landed in Munich, I knew that this was meant to be.
The plan is to stay in Munich, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Nuremberg, Bamberg and Würzburg - home to some of the very best markets. As usual I flew into Munich where I'm staying 9 nights (it's now Friday 06/12/24 and I leave Tuesday 10/12//24). So far I've made it to the main market at Marienplatz and a new one for me, a Medieval Christmas Market.
The Medieval market was very cool and I drank a variant of Glühwein, Drathenglut (Dragon's Embers) and ate a Barbarenspeiß (Barbarian Skewer) - an 18" wooden skewer with meat and a swirl of thin bread spun from top-to-bottom and roasted over a wooden fire - mmmmm, yummy.
Heading out now to hopefully check a few more markets in Munich today although rain is predicted early evening.
Next Blog I'll share some photos of some snow-covered mountain peeks in the Alps.
Until next time, be safe, be kind and peace out people.
